What elements does this tool exactly remove?
It removes: (1) JavaScript embedded in the document catalogue (/JavaScript, /Names entries with scripts), (2) Automatic open actions (/OpenAction, /AA in the catalogue and in individual pages), (3) The XMP metadata stream (/Metadata), and (4) Author information fields from the document info dictionary (Author, Creator, Keywords, Subject).
Does it guarantee the PDF is completely safe?
No. This tool removes known and standard elements. It cannot guarantee neutralisation of advanced attack vectors, payloads encrypted in non-standard object streams, or vulnerabilities in your PDF viewer. For high-criticality documents in corporate environments, use specialised document sandbox solutions.
Is the visual content of the document altered?
No. Page content (text, images, vectors) remains intact. Only metadata and scripting elements are removed from the PDF catalogue.
When is this useful?
It is useful when you receive PDFs from unknown third parties you want to share or distribute, when you need to strip author data before publishing a document, or when you want to ensure the PDF does not execute automatic actions on opening.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The entire sanitisation process runs locally in your browser using pdf-lib. The document never leaves your device.
